These days, CBD hemp oil is gaining quite a bit of momentum in the health and wellness world, opening up a whole new space for cannabis. But, while CBD has worked wonders for humans, can it also be a viable option for their pets?
If you’re already skeptical, consider this - the same endocannabinoid system (ECS) that exists in the human body also exists within all other mammals, including dogs, cats, horses, goats, and other livestock animals.
The ECS is essentially a major signaling network that runs through the nervous system, organs, tissue, glands, and immune system. The CBD interacts with the ECS’s receptors, influencing a wide range of functions and keeping them in balance while regulating the body’s homeostasis.
Non-intoxicating, plant-derived cannabinoids like CBD share a molecular structure similar to your animal’s own endocannabinoids, which means that these cannabinoids can cooperate with your pet’s cannabinoid receptors. Because of this, pet owners are starting to discover the natural benefits of supporting the ECS of their animals with supplements containing CBD.

What you need to know:
Pet supplements have risen in popularity because of the increase in pet ownership and humanization of pets. The $636m supplement market is expected to grow at a 5% rate, and CBD is leading the way. CBD sales are expected to increase at a 57% CAGR.
How you can capitalize:
Make a product backed by trials and testing. One industry expert believes 90% of current companies selling pet CBD are looking for quick profits.
Gamble on making pet food with CBD. For now, CBD is restricted to pet supplements. Experts believe it will eventually be allowed in food and dog treats, creating a wider market.
Last month in Las Vegas, the Mandalay Bay Convention Center transformed into Super Zoo, the largest gathering of pet retailers in North America. The thousands of people who attended woke up to dog yoga and ended their days with talks on pet sustainability. In between, on the tradeshow floor, they saw ungodly amounts of hemp.
For people, CBD and hemp have never been hotter, and pets are next. According to estimates from True Leaf and the research company Packaged Facts, pet CBD sales, were valued at $13m in 2017 and $20m this year. True Leaf anticipates they will grow at a 57% CAGR during the next several years. The overall pet supplement and wellness market is worth $636m and is expected to keep chugging at a 5% growth rate.
This sector of the pet industry thrives on the personification of pets. Some 90% of pet owners consider their pets family and treat them as such. They seek animal versions of the same supplements and wellness products they use: pills, chews and sprays that combat everything from depression to Alzheimer’s to joint pain. Just like with humans, CBD is being used to treat animals’ chronic pain, seizures and anxiety. CBD is most commonly used for dogs but also for cats and horses.
Bill Bookout, the founder and president of the National Animal Supplement Council, figured at least 150 companies exhibiting hemp and CBD-related pet supplements were at Super Zoo, double the number he had seen at other recent conventions. Darcy Bomford, the founder of True Leaf, which at four years old is a veteran in the pet CBD space, estimated the number of Super Zoo vendors specializing in CBD at 70. He pegged the number of companies offering a CBD product in some form at more than 300.
Three years ago at conferences, he remembers the hemp-CBD section featuring True Leaf and two other companies. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” Bomford says of the growth.

But wait... there's more...
While you’re here, how about a few fun facts?
*The professional e-sports industry will 5x by 2025 and be as big as Major League Baseball in 2025, making $30 billion a year.
*Large consumer brands (Proctor and Gamble, Nestle, etc) spending a record high amount of money buying small, niche drink startups vs. developing their own.
*Dozens of patents for popular medicines are expiring, and a handful of two-year-old startups are making billions selling the generic version of drugs online.

As the CBD boom continues, farmers across the country are ditching their former crops in favor of something more chill: hemp.
According to US Department of Agriculture data, the amount of farmland planted with hemp quadrupled in the past year, Quartz reports.
How did this all happen so fast?
Two words -- decriminalization and demand.
First, the 2018 Farm Bill made hemp farming legal last year, allowing farmers to start producing hemp plants as long as they are less than 0.3% THC by dry weight.
Then, when the first CBD products appeared -- mostly in pain-relieving wellness products -- they were hugely successful.
Demand for CBD-infused everything soon followed… Now, shoppers can buy CBD-infused fast food burgers (thanks, Carl’s Jr.), tea, honey, beer, chocolate, dog treats, bath salts, deodorants, protein powders, hot sauce, coffee, gummy candy, shampoo, and face creams... and the list goes on.
But all that CBD comes from hemp...
And all that hemp has to be grown
So farmers are scrambling to grow the newest, chillest cash crop. Even farmers who formerly had no interest in hemp are starting to grow it.
Why? Consider this: An acre of soybeans will make a farmer $500. An acre of hemp could make them as much as $30k.
For now, hemp farming may be a great deal for farmers. But regulators have yet to develop proper oversight practices, and some industry groups worry that hemp prices are still too volatile to take seriously.
No one knows when the high (prices) will wear off...
“The boom is coming mostly from word-of-mouth reports about hemp’s profitability,” reports the Hemp Industry Daily.
For now, growth is poised to continue: Planting of industrial hemp increased 368% from 2018 to 2019, outpacing all other crops, and some big producers -- like Ben & Jerry’s -- have expressed interest in buying CBD but are holding off until federal laws become more clear.
But if it turns out that the market for CBD dog treats isn’t as big as it’s being billed, the CBD boom could quickly go bust for the farmers who put all their hemp in one basket...
]]>CBD and Your Pets!
The newest indicator that pets have essentially become furry humans? Pet owners are starting to give dogs and cats CBD in the form of oils and chews.
In 2018, pet CBD sales totaled about $20m of the overall $600m pet supplements market. In the next several years, these CBD sales are expected to grow ~50% annually.
Pet owners hope CBD can prolong life!
Nobody wants to see a pet die, and people believe supplements will help them live longer. At the very least, CBD soothes joint pain and treats anxiety as they get older and more vulnerable.
And though about 50% of dogs are under age 4 now, that means a silver pet tsunami is coming in the future.
“I’ve had dogs my whole life and the hardest part is losing them,” says Darcy Bomford, founder of the pet CBD company True Leaf. “And you’ll do absolutely what it takes to make it better for them at the end.”
CBD may jump from a supplement to a food ingredient
For now, CBD is available only as a supplement. Bomford believes that in the future restrictions will ease, and the ingredient will be allowed in pet food and pet treats.
That’s right: Before you know it, Sparky will be wolfing down CBD for breakfast.

Step inside and find answers to some of the most asked questions regarding CBD, Hemp and Marijuana!
Top Hemp Myths Debunked
While hemp is known to have a variety of therapeutic properties, the plant’s growing popularity means it has become subject to an array of misconceptions. Here are a few of the top hemp myths, debunked.
Hemp and Marijuana are the One in the Same
While hemp and marijuana are both part of the cannabis sativa family, they are completely different from one another in both function and application. While marijuana is widely used for medicinal or recreational purposes, hemp is known to have over 25,000 possible applications.
Hemp Can Get You High
The THC levels found in hemp are so low that it’s virtually impossible to get high from it. Moreover, hemp contains a relatively high percentage of another cannabinoid, CBD, that actually impedes the marijuana-style high. That’s why hemp is most recognized for its wellness properties.
Hemp is Illegal
All cannabis varieties were heavily regulated when the 1937 Marijuana Tax Act was enforced. And following the 1970 Controlled Substances Act, all forms of cannabis, including hemp, were classified as a Schedule I drug. While misconceptions about hemp still persist, the 2018 Farm Bill made it legal for farmers to grow industrial hemp for the first time since the passage of the Controlled Substances Act.
Only Clothing and Rope is Made from Hemp
With the capabilities to produce crucial resources such as rope, clothing, paper, housing material, skincare products, and dietary supplements, hemp has been the catalyst for man’s earliest innovations. Although the value of hemp fiber has been acknowledged for centuries, other parts of the plant—seeds, core, and flowers—have become valuable commodities in the modern era.
The Truth Will Set You Free
The more we equip people with the truth about hemp, the less likely these myths will perpetuate any longer.]]>

CBD Looks to Protect Against Endometrial Cancer by Activating TRPV1 Receptors
Among a variety of phytocannabinoids, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are the most promising therapeutic compounds. Besides the well-known palliative effects in cancer patients, cannabinoids have been shown to inhibit in vitro growth of tumor cells. Likewise, the major endocannabinoids (eCBs), anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), induce tumor cell death.
The purpose of the present study was to characterize cannabinoid elements and evaluate the effect of cannabinoids in endometrial cancer cell viability. The presence of cannabinoid receptors, transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1), and endocannabinoid-metabolizing enzymes were determined by qRT-PCR and Western blot. We also examined the effects and the underlying mechanisms induced by eCBs and phytocannabinoids in endometrial cancer cell viability.
Besides TRPV1, both EC cell lines express all the constituents of the endocannabinoid system. We observed that at concentrations higher than 5 μM, eCBs and CBD induced a significant reduction in cell viability in both Ishikawa and Hec50co cells, whereas THC did not cause any effect. In Ishikawa cells, contrary to Hec50co, treatment with AEA and CBD resulted in an increase in the levels of activated caspase -3/-7, in cleaved PARP, and in reactive oxygen species generation, confirming that the reduction in cell viability observed in the MTT assay was caused by the activation of the apoptotic pathway.
Finally, these effects were dependent on TRPV1 activation and intracellular calcium levels. These data indicate that cannabinoids modulate endometrial cancer cell death. Selective targeting of TPRV1 by AEA, CBD, or other stable analogues may be an attractive research area for the treatment of estrogen-dependent endometrial carcinoma.
Our data further support the evaluation of CBD and CBD-rich extracts for the potential treatment of endometrial cancer, particularly, that has become non-responsive to common therapies.

CBD Looks to Protects Against the Damaging Effects of Iron in Aging Brain Diseases
HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: We report a 79-year-old patient with post-polio syndrome (PPS). In the course of this disease, recurrent upper abdominal pain and a therapy-resistant nausea developed without vomiting. In addition, the patient was limited by the combination of muscular weakness, obesity, dietary-treated diabetes and a degenerative spinal cord injury significantly in its mobility and physical capacity.
INVESTIGATIONS AND DIAGNOSIS: Despite extensive diagnostics, no somatic cause could be found neither for the nausea nor for the upper abdominal pain. Due to the psychological stress within the scope of the PPS, the development of a somatoform autonomic function disorder of the upper gastrointestinal tract may have occurred.
TREATMENT AND COURSE: Even under combination therapy of antiemetic and pain-modulating drugs, no adequate symptom control could be achieved. In the absence of therapy alternatives and increasing psychological strain the patient was prescribed medical cannabis. Under the therapy there was a relief of the nausea symptoms and decreased pain.
CONCLUSION: Cannabis is a treatment option for treatment-resistant symptoms as part of a PPS.

Professional and Amateur Athletes and CBDs
Many athletes are now using CBD to help their physical problems. Take a look at how the worlds of CBD and sports mix.
The professional sports world is always fraught with injuries that often affects athletes for the rest of their lives. Dealing with pain and other illnesses is often going to mean doctors prescribing pharmaceutical drugs to manage the issue.
CBD is now becoming an alternative to these drugs, even though the medical community hasn't always considered it as an option.
Fortunately, many athletes are now using CBD to help their physical health and fitness. Take a look at athletes already using it and the conditions it's helping.
CBD and Sports: Helping Professional and Amateur Athletes:
You'll find evidence that not only professional athletes are using CBD, but also amateur ones. They're discovering CBD doesn't have a psychoactive effect like other cannabinoids do, which already makes it attractive.
Most of all, it's a safe alternative to pain medications without worry about it being addictive. With the ability to reduce inflammation, you can see why athletes want to gravitate toward CBD use.
Yet, in recent years, the World and U.S. Doping Agencies didn't allow the use of it in professional sports. This changed last year when CBD was finally approved for use by all competitive athletes.
Now the race is on to see which athletes use it next to prove the value of combining CBD and sports.
]]>
The only reason it surprised some is because many still equated CBD to using regular cannabis with high THC. With more education, athletes now understand it's not the same thing, despite being from the same cannabis plant.
What makes Morgan's use of it so significant is that he's advocated others in the NFL to use CBD. Despite Morgan getting the credit for snowballing use, offensive tackle Eugene Monroe was really the first to use the drug.
